KANSAI REGION –  關 西 地 方

The Kansai Region is located in the central-western area of Japan’s main island of Honshu. There are seven prefectures in the Kansai Region: Hyogo Prefecture, Mie Prefecture, Nara Prefecture, Kyoto Urban Prefecture, Osaka Prefecture, Shiga Prefecture, & Wakayama Prefecture.

Sometimes Fukui Prefecture is also included in the Kansai Region. Two urban prefectures are also sometimes included in the Kansai Region: Osaka Prefecture & Kyoto Prefecture.

The Kansai Region forms the core region of western Japan and is the country’s largest urban and economic zone after the Kanto Region. Many historical buildings and landscapes have been preserved in the region.

Like the other regions of Japan, the Kansai Region is not an administrative unit, but rather a cultural and historical designation. The Kansai Region emerged during the Heian Period in Japanese history. At that time, the Kanto Region began to develop in eastern Honshu, and there was a need to differentiate the Kanto Region from what was previously the center of Japan in Kansai.
