YUNNAN – 雲南省

Yuanyang, south of Kunming, Yunnan Province. The Yuangang Terraces were constructed by the native Hani ethnic people about 1,000 thousand years ago. They remain in use for agricultural purposes in the present day. The mists at dawn and sunset have inspired generations of traditional Chinese ink and wash painting techniques. Ceramic vase by Guo Yu (Modern era). Jianshui County, Yunnan. Pottery-making in Jianshui dates back 3,500 years. During the Song (C.E. 420-479) and Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties, Jianshui was the center of pottery-making in Yunnan. Since the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Jianshui’s purple pottery (建水紫陶 ) has become one the four most famous potteries in China.

Nixi Black Pottery, from the Diqing Tibetan autonomous prefecture, Yunnan province. Caravans on the ancient Tea Horse Road would pick up the black pottery from the village while ferrying brick loads of tea to and from Tibet for trade.
